Light from above

Moonlighting & Downlighting in Nashville

Soft, natural light filtered through the branches, so your yard looks washed by a perfect full moon every night.

Moonlighting is the most natural lighting effect there is. Fixtures hidden high in a tree shine downward through the leaves, casting soft, dappled shadows across the lawn, the patio and the walk below. It reads as moonlight rather than lighting, which is why it’s a favorite for entertaining spaces and for properties with big, mature trees.

Because the light comes from above, it covers a lot of ground with very few fixtures and no glare at eye level. Mounted correctly, it also pairs beautifully with uplighting so trees glow while the ground beneath them stays gently lit.

Natural, soft coverage

Light from above feels like moonlight and covers large areas evenly with minimal glare.

Dappled shadow effects

Leaves and branches create moving, organic patterns on lawns, walls and patios.

Fewer fixtures, bigger reach

One well-placed downlight can wash a whole seating area or section of the yard.

Layers with uplighting

Combine both to create real depth, so trees glow and the ground below stays inviting.

Our process

How we do it.

Four calm, clear steps from first conversation to finished glow.

  1. 1

    Survey your tree canopy

We look for strong limbs at the right height and a clear view of the area to be lit.

  2. 2

    Mount and aim

Fixtures are secured with tree-safe hardware and aimed to create the shadow pattern you like.

  3. 3

    Route the wiring neatly

Cable follows the trunk and branches, concealed and strain-relieved.

  4. 4

    Adjust for the seasons

We can tune the effect as the canopy changes through the year.

Good to know

Moonlighting questions.

Is moonlighting safe for my trees?

Yes, when done correctly. We use flexible, tree-safe hardware that doesn’t cut into the trunk and we adjust it as the tree grows.

What if I don’t have tall trees?

We can mount downlights on a pergola, eaves or a pole to get a similar soft wash.

Will it work in winter when trees are bare?

Yes. The shadows are more graphic with bare branches and the light still reaches the ground.
